Sierra de Guadarrama National Park is a national park in Spain, covering nearly 34,000 hectares, the fifth largest in Spain’s national parks system.
The project aims to protect the eleven different ecosystems present in the Guadarrama mountains, including the only Iberian examples of “high Mediterranean mountain”. Altogether there are more than 1,280 different species in the zone recently declared a national park, of which 13 are in danger of extinction, more than 1,500 native plants and 30 different types of vegetation. The species of animals in the mountains represent 45% of the total fauna of Spain and 18% of European fauna.
The vegetation features the Scots pine, the oak, the juniper, the oak and piorno and many other species. As regards fauna, there are many mammals such as deer (red, roe and fallow), wild boar, wild goats, badgers, several mustelidaes, wild cats, foxes, hares, etc.; many species of waterfowl in the reservoirs, and great raptors like the Spanish imperial eagle or the Eurasian black vulture. Recently, a pack of wolves was discovered in the park after a 70-year absence in the region. If you are lucky you can see them walking around.
Sierra de Guadarrama National Park and Valle del Lozoya has a lot of impressive walks and cycle routes:
1.- Laguna Grande de Peñalara. 3-4 hours. Summer, beginning of autum or late spring. In winter time alpine gear is required.
2.- Waterfall de Mojonavalle (Canencia) 2h. All year around, better in springtime.
3.- Waterfall del Purgatorio (Rascafría), 3-4 h. All year around, better in springtime.
4.- Waterfall de San Mamés (San Mamés), 3-4 h. All year around, better in springtime.
5.- La horizontal cycle route (Puerto de Navafría). Forest road over 1.800 meters of elevation among scott pines. All year around. Snow in wintertime.
6.- Natural path del Valle del Lozoya, from Lozoya to Rascafría, flat, better by bike. All year around.
7.- Puerto de Canencia, forest road from Canencia to La Morcuera high pass. All year around, snow in winter time.
8.- Beech forest “Hayedo de Montejo”, birch forest “abedular de Canencia”, Sabine forest “Sabinar de Lozoya”. It’s a selection of the natural forests.
9.- Adventure Park, farm with teatre, canoeing, animation, swimming pools, restaurant in Monte Holiday Ecoturismo.
WHAT TO SEE IN MADRID (70 km) , at least it takes two days to visit. We are 45 minutes from Madrid, you can leave your car in a parking lot near the metro. It is faster!
WHAT TO SEE IN SEGOVIA, 60 km from Monte Holiday.
Visit of a day to Segovia. The Roman Acueduct, the Jewish neighborhood and the Cathedral and Alcazar. About two and a half hours. Suggested timetable: from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.) 10:30 p.m .: this is a very good time to start the visit of Segovia.
